The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and started a course on Public Health Approaches to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) under the aegis of the World NCD Federation (WNF) in 2015. This course is held alternatively at Chandigarh and New Delhi. Almost 50-60 professionals participate in the course each year.
The course focuses on the prevention, surveillance and management of NCDs including mental health in the Indian, regional and global context. It will focus on sharing best practices and lessons from the experience of implementing NCD prevention and control programs covering a wide variety of areas like health promotion, health system strengthening, quality improvement programs, multi-sectoral actions, surveillance, etc. The course has already completed seven editions at the national and international levels, the current being the 8th edition. The faculty will include experts from the international and national level and experienced program managers. Till date, about 400 participants which include Programme managers at the state and district level, faculty from Medical colleges, postgraduate community medicine students, Masters in public health students and public health professionals from almost every state of India and different regions of the world have been trained in these courses. Also, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time this course was conducted in the virtual format in 2021.
Program Managers at District/ Province/ State/ National level, Junior Faculty, Residents from Medical Colleges, Professionals from Non-Governmental Organizations from India and other South-east countries, and international organizations are targeted as prospective participants for the course. 100 participants are chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis while ensuring diversity.
